Sure, An Bang has been stealing the spotlight as Hoi An’s most popular beach for years. But the quieter Tan Thanh doesn’t seem to mind. In fact, Tan Thanh’s under-the-radar tranquility is a big part of its allure. Locals and travelers seem to share the beach in a fine balance between fishing activities and swimming, sunbathing, or watersports, plus the occasional game of beach volleyball that brings everyone together. Join us for a relaxing beach day on Tan Thanh in Hoi An.
Morning routines
Feel the local rhythm of life by going for a walk on Tan Thanh in the morning. Hoi An residents love to start their day on this beach with a refreshing swim, run, or yoga flow. The peaceful seascape here is a great reminder of what they have to be grateful for every day. You might also catch sight of basket boats coming ashore on the glistening waters–a scene made even more beautiful when basked in the sunrise.
Fishing traditions
Travelers can still appreciate Tan Thanh’s history as a fishing village just by coming here. Wake up early to see local fishermen pull nets and gather over fresh catches. These plump fish, shrimp, crab, and squid then go to restaurants and markets all over Hoi An. If you’re lucky enough to catch these fishermen in action, don’t be afraid to lend a hand! They might even offer you a small share of the catch for a tasty seafood lunch.
Seafood on the sand
In the afternoon, vendors start laying out small chairs and tables in between beach clubs’ bean bags and sun loungers and serve up hot bowls of clam porridge (chao ngheu), a popular local specialty. Come dinner time, order yourself some delicious steamed squid and lemongrass clam from Ms. Be who runs the modest Family Restaurant right on the beach, or head to Barefoot Beach Club for some grilled snapper or prawn tacos in a cheerful setting.
Fun on the water
From September to April every year is the surfing season in Hoi An. Rent a board with Hoian Flow, Tan Thanh’s friendliest surf shack, and paddle out to catch some waves. For the rest of the year, Hoian Flow offers kitesurfing and windsurfing lessons, as well as summer camps for kids. Join a guided SUP sunrise tour and watch as the sun peeks above the Cham Islands for an unforgettable experience.
Sustainable shopping
At the Tan Thanh Flea Market, your shopping is always guilt-free. Browse for locally made products at the market which takes place every weekend on Nguyen Phan Vinh Street. From rattan bags and baskets to ethnic embroideries and homemade Hoi An chili sauce, bringing home these authentic souvenirs is a wonderful way to give back to the community. Travelers can stop by the community house on the same street to learn more about these green products.
Beach-front stays
It’s the end of the day and you realize you might have fallen in love with Tan Thanh Beach. Like all fools in love, you’re thinking about spending the night. A number of cute boutique resorts, hotels, and villas offer cozy stays right on the beach at Tan Thanh. Dechiu Hotel is an architectural gem with tasteful ethnic touches, while the rooms at Palm Garden are just a few steps from the sand and come with breezy canopies.
